Routines and Procedures
Having daily routines and procedures in place in a class room can save a ton of time and frustration from the teacher and the students. Some students may not have a regular routine at home, therefore, at school they need a very structured environment where they can feel safe. According to the National Education Association, "when students know exactly what is expected of them in a variety of situations, the time saved can be spent teaching rather than organizing or disciplining" (Set Up Rules and Routines).
Routines and Procedures in my Classroom:
-Homework Tray and Binders
-Class Schedule Posted
-PowerPoint of Morning Routine
-Sharp/Dull Pencils
-Quiet Table Rewards
-Perfect Attendance Smiley Faces
-Wishing Well
-School Family Assemblies
-Welcoming Class
-Having a class schedule posted where it is visible for all students is so important. This gives the students a sense of safety because they will be doing the same schedule every day. This makes for very few questions such as, "Where are we going next?" or "What time is lunch?" With fewer questions about the routines, makes more time for learning.
-Have you ever heard, "MY PENCIL BROKE" in a silent classroom? I have, but not in my classroom. On the first day of school, I plan to model to my students what to do when their pencil becomes dull or breaks. Then, I will have a student model the desired behavior. Next, I will have another student model the undesired behavior such as yelling out and disturbing peers learning. Lastly, I will reiterate the correct procedure on what to do if a pencil breaks.
-Having a welcoming class is an important aspect to create that school family mentioned under the Classroom Management Tab. I plan to do this by posting a sign such as the one below to remind students of our greeting on certain days. For example, every Wednesday, I will meet my students at the door as they are arriving and greet them with a wink for "Winking Wednesday". Another example is "Thumbs-Up Thursday" where I will greet them with a thumbs-up. This will be an established routine in my class so that all students get a proper greeting in the morning so start their super star day.
